A businessman from Kerala was apprehended at Pune International Airport for attempting to smuggle a luxury Rolex watch worth Rs 50 lakh from Dubai. He was required to pay Rs 18 lakh in duty immediately before being released by Customs officials. Acting on specific intelligence, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs intercepted the passenger who had arrived from Dubai on Wednesday morning.

According to officials, the businessman, along with his son and daughter-in-law, passed through the green channel without making any declarations. When questioned about the Rolex watch he was wearing, he initially claimed it was an old watch. However, due to prior information, officials had it evaluated.

Using the serial number, they discovered it was a brand new 2024 series Rolex Sky-Dweller Oyster Perpetual Superlative Chronometer, valued at approximately Rs 48.24 lakh. A further inspection of his luggage revealed the invoice for the watch. The businessman, who operates in the scrap business, ultimately consented to pay the duty of Rs 18.57 lakh.

The watch was then returned to him along with an official Customs certificate, and he was allowed to leave afterward.
