Pune: Pune Civil Aviation Expert Dhairyashil Vandekar has informed that Automated External Defibrillators (AED) are going to be made available at Pune Airport.

As per further information shared by Vandekar, during his visit to Pune airport medical facility in February 2023, he had observed that AED was not available at the facility and also the requirement of critical care equipment especially required for the ‘Golden Hour treatment’. He brought to the notice of the Airport Director, AAI, Pune the necessity of such lifesaving equipment and facilities at the airport especially in view of increased cardiac incidences post-Covid in youth. He later followed up this demand with Chairman, AAI, New Delhi and central Civil Aviation Minister, Government of India. On September 2, 2023, Vandekar wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterating this demand along with some other civil aviation requirements of Pune and Maharashtra.

Vandekar says that Office of Ministry of Civil Aviation have informed that Fresh EOI has been published by AAI-Pune Airport on 30.8.2023 for operation of Medical Inspection (MI) Room at Pune Airport with requirement of 5 AED/PADs to be provided by Health Service Provider. AED has also been made available at the present Medical Inspection (MI) room of Pune Airport.

Dhairyashil Vandekar further states that the provisioning of AED will not only uplift the image of Pune airport but with the availability of such lifesaving equipment will go a long way in making passengers journey through the airport more safe, relaxed and stress-free as often availability of such emergency equipment at airports is often at the top of the mind of passengers mainly the senior citizens, unwell, international passengers. It is notable that about 120 AEDs have been strategically placed at Mumbai airport and the retrieval time of the nearest AED is not more than 3 minutes if a passenger collapses due to cardiac arrest. The AED at Pune Airport will benefit passengers as well as vendors, airport and airlines, security staff and other stakeholders at the airport in cardiac emergencies.
