Pune Airport Expansion Plan: 300 Acres to Be Acquired for Runway Extension and New MRO Facility
Leopard Spotted Again at Pune Airport; Forest Department Issues Alert to Civil & IAF Authorities
Pune, November 12, 2025: Pune’s long-awaited airport expansion project has gained momentum, with the Maharashtra government submitting a detailed proposal to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation. The plan outlines the acquisition of over 300 acres of land for runway extension and new aviation infrastructure, including an aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility.
According to officials, the proposal will also be sent to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for clearance, as Pune Airport functions under the Indian Air Force’s jurisdiction. Only after receiving approval from the MoD will the land acquisition process begin. The required land includes a mix of government and private properties surrounding the existing airfield.
The expansion aims to extend the current runway, increase parking bays, and set up a dedicated terminal for private aircraft and helicopters. A major feature of the plan is the establishment of an MRO facility, which will allow aircraft servicing and repairs within Pune itself — reducing the need to depend on other major cities for maintenance work.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol confirmed the development, stating, “The proposal for Pune airport expansion, which includes a general aviation terminal and an MRO unit, has been submitted to the Centre. The project requires over 300 acres of land.”
Officials added that the increasing number of private helicopters and chartered flights from Pune has created a demand for a separate general aviation terminal to streamline operations. Once the runway is extended, the airport will also be able to handle larger aircraft and increase overall flight capacity.
The proposal marks a significant step toward transforming Pune Airport into a modern aviation hub, enhancing both commercial and private flight operations in the region.
