Pune: Alert Society Staff Prevent Major Fire Disaster At NIBM Road Housing Society After Inverter Blast
Pune, April 16, 2026: A major fire disaster was averted at Sunshree Woods Co-operative Housing Society on NIBM Road after an inverter battery explosion triggered a blaze in a residential flat on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred around 5:00 pm at where the inverter had been placed in the balcony. Residents reported hearing a loud explosion-like sound, followed by thick black smoke and flames rapidly spreading across the balcony area, creating panic in the society.
At the time, the occupants, and her son, were inside the drawing room and escaped unharmed, though visibly shaken.
Displaying remarkable alertness and courage, society staff members Sudeep Singh, a supervisor, and Nishikant, a cleaner, rushed to the flat and began firefighting efforts using extinguishers. Despite the dense smoke and risk to their lives, they continued to battle the flames by fetching buckets of water from the bathroom until the fire was brought under control.
Fire brigade personnel later arrived at the scene and assisted in fully extinguishing the blaze.
In a critical move that helped avert a larger catastrophe, the occupant quickly removed two gas cylinders from the balcony, reducing the risk of further explosions. Neighbour Imran also acted swiftly by switching off the main electricity supply and removing curtains and other flammable materials to prevent the fire from spreading.
Residents noted that a fire safety audit of the society had been conducted around six months ago.
The prompt response and presence of mind shown by the society staff and residents played a crucial role in preventing what could have turned into a major fire tragedy. Residents have recommended that Sudeep Singh and Nishikant be honoured with a gallantry award by the Pune Municipal Corporation or the fire department for their bravery and timely intervention.
