Pune has ranked among the world’s most congested cities, securing the fourth position globally, as per the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index report. The annual study by TomTom, a Dutch location technology specialist, revealed that Kolkata is India’s most congested city, followed by Bengaluru, while Pune, with an average travel time of 33 minutes and 22 seconds to cover 10 km, stands out as one of India’s slowest-moving cities.

Kolkata Overtakes Bengaluru as India’s Most Congested City

Kolkata claimed the top spot in India, with drivers requiring an average of 34 minutes and 33 seconds to travel 10 km. Bengaluru, the previous titleholder, ranked second, with an average time of 34 minutes and 10 seconds.

In comparison, Pune recorded an average speed of 18 kmph, slightly faster than Kolkata (17.4 kmph) and Bengaluru (17.6 kmph), but still significantly slow in global rankings.

India’s Other Congested Cities

Other Indian cities that ranked high for congestion include:

Blis1
  • Hyderabad: 32 minutes to cover 10 km
  • Chennai: 30 minutes
  • Mumbai: 29 minutes

Ahmedabad, Ernakulam, and Jaipur also featured as slower cities, with average travel times ranging between 28-29 minutes for 10 km. Surprisingly, New Delhi reported a much lower travel time of just 23 minutes.

Global Rankings: Where Pune Stands

Globally, Barranquilla in Colombia emerged as the city with the slowest average speed of 10.3 mph (16.6 kmph), requiring 36 minutes to cover 10 km. Kolkata ranked second globally, followed by Bengaluru in third place, Pune in fourth, and London, the first European city on the list, in fifth.

Alarming Trends in Urban Traffic

The report highlighted that 76% of the 500 cities analyzed worldwide experienced increased travel times compared to 2023. Factors such as outdated infrastructure, inefficient road planning, and rapid urbanization were identified as major contributors to worsening congestion.

Ralf-Peter Schäfer, Vice President of Traffic at TomTom, emphasized the need for sustainable transportation solutions to mitigate urban congestion. “Static factors like road infrastructure, combined with dynamic influences such as peak-hour traffic and weather conditions, are driving congestion globally,” Schäfer explained.
