Pune, January 27, 2026: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Saturday launched Phase 2 of the audio guide system at the historic Shaniwarwada fort, introducing spot-specific audio narration and Indian Sign Language (ISL) video interpretation to enhance visitor experience and accessibility.

Developed under the supervision of the ASI Mumbai Circle, the second phase expands the existing audio guide by offering location-based information across different sections of the monument. The initiative aims to improve historical interpretation while ensuring inclusive access for visitors with hearing impairments.

The upgraded audio guide is part of ASI’s collaboration with GunjIndia to provide multilingual, geo-triggered audio guides at protected monuments across the country. Visitors can access detailed historical and architectural information by scanning QR codes placed at various points within the fort, enabling a seamless self-guided tour. The service is currently available in three languages.

The inclusion of ISL videos aligns with the organisation’s broader policy to make monuments more accessible to persons with disabilities. ASI has decided to progressively introduce accessible interpretation at all monuments under its care, including facilities for the deaf and hard of hearing.

In addition to audio narration, the platform integrates sign language support, ensuring that visitors with hearing impairments can engage meaningfully with the site’s history.

Under the programme, the ASI Mumbai Circle plans to roll out similar audio guide systems at 25 additional protected monuments by March 31. The project at Shaniwarwada was implemented with the involvement of on-site staff and officials from the ASI Mumbai Circle and Pune sub-circle.

The initiative is part of ASI’s broader push towards digitising monument-related information and using technology to improve visitor engagement without relying on physical guides or printed materials.
