Pune: Citizens in Baner of the Ram Indu Park and the surrounding area await electricity to bless their daily functions and chores to restore normality. They have come to a standstill after a power outage since 10:30 last night. There has been no supply due to a transformer failure. Around 2:00 pm today, the MSEDCL informed them that they are going to change the faulty parts of the transformer which are affected.

According to citizens, this issue happened due to a lack of frequent checks, and as solving the problem gets credit in India, why the problem arose in the first place never gets questioned. A need for proper maintenance was emphasised so that such problems do not arise again.

IT companies in the vicinity of the area, which also face this issue at times, always get electricity supply for 24 hours; even when the power does go out during those periods, it is restored immediately. There is someone to visit for daily or weekly maintenance checks and they do not shut down during such instances as they go through these rigorous maintenance checks.

Now, these checks are necessary because they can predetermine the condition of all machinery, like the transformers as well; this is because the failure could be predicted beforehand, and repaired. As the light goes out every day for about 2-3 hours on average, citizens have found a way around that somehow; but a prolonged power outage for 17 hours is outrageously long.

People believe when the monsoon commences, such instances will happen more often. The Ram Indu Park has many flats and bungalows consisting of many foreigners and NRIs who reside there — what they might perceive about the country when facing such issues was also one trail of thought.

Despite this, people are unable to fill the overhead tanks during power outages and have to use saved water, which depletes rapidly. Issues like food in the refrigerator going stale are common, as 17 hours without electricity is a long time; it is not just the food, but also medicines in the refrigerator; additionally, the inverter also lasts about 6-8 hours, and that too requires power to charge. Citizens’ plea for the MSEDCL to follow standard operating procedures, proper plans and weekly maintenance.

In conversation with Nishikant Raut, the PRO of MSEDCL, he assured us that it is completely due to the failure of the transformer and takes responsibility for what happened. He mentioned that the failure was due to multiple issues, mainly internal faults, and while the replacement is taking time, there is immense difficulty in the room in repairing all the damaged parts. Catering to the cause of failure is taking time to be replaced and causing the delay. He has assured the Pune Pulse, conveying to citizens that the electricity will resume its course in the next 30-40 minutes and the inconvenience is regretted. While there is any redressal, they can reach out to the body and seek help with the issue.
