The residents of Nancy Garden Society from Wanowrie are complaining of neglect. Even after years of trials and tribulations, the problems persist. The residents are fighting the stench of blood and flesh from the slaughterhouse near the residential area.

The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) slaughterhouse has been discharging its waste into a nalla which flows behind the society. The blood flowing in it and the stench produced by the dumped flesh have been a concern of the citizens for a while now.

Shivaji Shinde, the secretary of Nancy Garden Society, complained that the residents have been writing to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pune Cantonment Board and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) about the nalla water being contaminated and how it has been neglected for too long. He said, “The slaughterhouse is discharging the waste, blood in the nalla which flows near our society. The water quality has definitely gone down. Also, it is mandatory for the slaughterhouse to have its own waste discharge system. For years we have been complaining but they have paid no heed to our complaints.”

In April, the residents had voiced their concerns to the MPCB Pune and the officials had promised to do a site visit to address the issue.

Pune Pulse spoke to the MPCB and the officials told us that a site visit has been conducted now and the issue has been sent to the concerned departments for further action.

The nalla has been a cause of water pollution in the Salunke Vihar Road nalla, which is a freshwater source. The nalla joins from Lulla Nagar, merges with Bhairoba nalla and then contaminates the freshwater source near Reliance mall. The residents demand quick action to control water pollution as well as to provide them relief from the stench they are constantly living in.
