Pune: Banned RO Plants Resume Operations in Dhayari, Nanded Amid GBS Outbreak – Check List of Suspended Facilities
Pune: Several previously banned RO water plants in Dhayari and Nanded have restarted operations, raising concerns among residents amid the ongoing Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) outbreak. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had earlier shut down 19 RO plants after tests revealed their water was unfit for drinking.
Despite the closures, these facilities have resumed services without an official confirmation from PMC regarding corrective measures or water safety standards. This has left residents and business owners in Nanded and Dhayari worried about the quality of water being supplied.
Public Concern Over Water Safety
Shantanu Dhamthere, Vice President of Vyapari Sangathan Singhada Road, criticized the lack of transparency from PMC. He said, “Many people are unaware of which 19 RO companies were banned. These suppliers have resumed operations, but there are no rules from PMC to ensure water quality or hold violators accountable.”
Residents are also voicing their frustration over PMC’s inaction. Shruti Tiwari, a resident of Nanded, said, “The GBS outbreak has exposed the incompetence of civic authorities. Why does it always take a health crisis to prompt action? We rely on RO water, assuming it’s safe, but there is no proper regulation in place.”
Background on GBS Outbreak
The ban on these RO plants came after an alarming rise in GBS cases, a rare nerve disorder. Investigations found that contaminated water from these plants was a potential health risk, prompting the immediate shutdown of 19 facilities in the affected areas.
