Pune Bridge Collapse: 4 Dead, 32 Injured After Iron Bridge Over Indrayani River Gives Way in Kundmala
Pune, June 15, 2025 — At least four people lost their lives and 32 others were injured after a decades-old iron bridge collapsed over the Indrayani River in Kundmala, located in Pune district’s Maval tehsil, on Sunday afternoon. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 PM, triggered a massive rescue operation by multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
According to officials, the iron footbridge—over 30 years old—was overcrowded with nearly 100 people when it suddenly gave way. The site is popular among tourists, especially during the monsoon season, and Sunday saw a large weekend footfall due to the scenic dam and waterfalls nearby.
Rescue Operation Underway, NDRF on Site
Emergency response teams from the Talegaon Dabhade Police and two NDRF units were swiftly deployed and are continuing rescue operations. Several people fell into the river, and authorities fear the death toll may rise as search efforts continue.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the tragedy. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said:
“Deeply saddened to hear about the collapse of the bridge over the Indrayani River in Indori, Pune district. According to preliminary reports, multiple casualties have been reported. I’m in constant touch with officials to ensure all assistance is provided.”
Six Seriously Injured, Hospitalised
Among the injured, six individuals are in critical condition and are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. The remaining victims have sustained minor injuries.
Sunil Shelke, MLA from Maval, stated:
“The bridge was around 30 years old. It is believed that the aging structure, combined with water pressure from the dam and the heavy rush of tourists, led to the collapse.”
Leaders Demand Accountability
Expressing concern over the incident, NCP MP Supriya Sule called it “deeply unfortunate” and said she had spoken to the Pune District Collector to ensure immediate relief and medical aid.
“We pray for the safety of those missing and urge the government to act on structural audits of old bridges,” she added.
