Pune: Caretaker Arrested From Sangli For Stealing Jewellery Worth ₹23 Lakh From Employer’s House
Pune, May 21, 2026: The Vishrantwadi Police have arrested a caretaker from Sangli district for allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth nearly ₹23 lakh from the house where she was employed to look after an elderly woman.
The accused has been identified as Snehal Subhash Salunkhe (28), a resident of Pune Station area and originally from Wategaon in Sangli district. She was produced before a court on Thursday, which remanded her to three days of police custody for further investigation.
The complaint was lodged by Amol Vijay Tendulkar (42), a resident of Hariganga Society in Phulenagar, Yerawada. The alleged theft took place between November 5, 2025 and May 16, 2026.
According to police officials, the complainant had hired Salunkhe around six months ago to take care of his mother at home. During this period, the accused allegedly stole gold ornaments one by one while taking advantage of the absence of other family members in the house.
The theft came to light on May 16 when the complainant checked his mother’s cupboard and discovered that jewellery worth ₹22.88 lakh was missing. On the same day, the caretaker also failed to report for work, raising suspicion against her.
Following the complaint, Vishrantwadi Police launched an investigation and suspected that the accused had fled to her native village in Sangli district. Using technical surveillance and analysis, the police traced and arrested her from Wategaon.
Police Sub-Inspector Shabbir Sheikh is conducting further investigation to recover the stolen jewellery and determine where the ornaments were hidden.
