Pune, January 23, 2026: A senior citizen was targeted in a gold chain snatching incident near Delhi Public School (DPS) in Mohammedwadi on Wednesday evening between 7 and 7.30 PM, raising fresh concerns about safety in the area. The incident took place at the corner ahead of the school, a location residents describe as a poorly lit blind spot.

According to information provided by the victim, an unknown assailant approached, snatched the gold chain and fled before anyone could intervene. The victim immediately lodged a complaint at the nearest police station. Police personnel quickly reached the spot to collect evidence and record statements.

Police have obtained CCTV footage from establishments near the crime scene and are analyzing it to identify the suspect, said the victim.

However, residents claim this is not an isolated case. The victim stated that three similar chain-snatching incidents have occurred at the same location in the past two months. Local citizens allege that inadequate lighting and lack of visibility due to overgrown trees have made the area vulnerable to such crimes.

“The stretch ahead of the school has become risky, especially during evening hours. It needs proper street lighting and pruning of trees for better visibility,” a resident said.

Residents of Mohammedwadi and surrounding areas have urged authorities to take corrective measures promptly. Several citizens are now demanding increased police patrolling, installation of surveillance cameras, and infrastructure improvements to deter repeat offenders.

The incident has sparked fresh conversation on the need for preventive action rather than reactive policing. With the series of chain-snatching cases reported in the same spot, locals expect the Pune Municipal Corporation and police to coordinate and ensure the area becomes safe for pedestrians, senior citizens, and school children.

Authorities have assured that efforts are underway to trace the culprit and that safety concerns raised by residents will be communicated to the relevant departments.
