Pune: Chandrakant Patil orders ILS Law College to refund excess fees with 6% interest
Pune, April 28, 2026: Maharashtra’s Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil has directed ILS Law College to return excess fees collected from students, along with 6% annual interest. The action follows an inquiry conducted after intervention by the Bombay High Court.
The inquiry found that the college collected fees in a non-transparent and unauthorised manner. According to Patil, students were charged without prior approval from Savitribai Phule Pune University, which is mandatory under the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016.

A three-member committee set up in March reported that during the academic years 2020–21, 2021–22 and 2024–25, students were asked to pay under several unapproved fee categories. In one case, a student reportedly paid ₹1,04,863 under 17 such heads without proper approval.
Based on these findings, the Directorate of Higher Education has instructed the college to refund the excess amount with interest from the date of payment. The institution must also submit a compliance report.
Patil said the government will not tolerate financial irregularities that affect students and parents. He has also ordered officials to investigate similar complaints in other colleges across Maharashtra and take strict action where necessary.
