Pune, November 21, 2025: A citizens’ protest titled RamNadi Satyagraha will begin on Friday, November 28, demanding immediate action from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to stop the discharge of untreated sewage into Ram Nadi. Residents will stage the protest inside the river itself, at the spot where nearly 70% of the sewage is reportedly released — a location repeatedly highlighted to authorities without any corrective measures.

Despite multiple complaints, site visits, and clear orders from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Divisional Commissioner, the flow of untreated sewage continues unabated. Citizens allege that PMRDA’s prolonged inaction has pushed the river into an alarming state, leaving them with no choice but to adopt peaceful civil resistance.

Advocate Krunnal Gharre, who is leading the agitation, said he has consistently worked with integrity for the restoration of Ram Nadi, but bureaucratic delays have halted progress.
“Many authorities are offering false hope and engaging in bureaucratic games. I have followed every legal and administrative route, but now the fight has to move to the streets. A spot that releases 70–80% of the river’s sewage needs only a 30-metre connection, yet PMRDA refuses to act. The Pashan STP is already delayed by 15 months. This is unacceptable. Citizens from Bavdhan, Bhugaon and other areas along Ram Nadi have extended their support. We will stand in the sewage-filled river; authorities alone are responsible for forcing citizens into this,” he said.

Key Demands:

  • PMRDA must immediately complete the mandated work and comply with directives issued by the NGT and the Divisional Commissioner.
  • The long-delayed Pashan STP must be made operational without further delay.
