Pune: i10 and XUV Crash Head-On on Jagtap Dairy–Wakad BRT Road, Family Injured
Pune, Thursday: A serious collision between an i10 and a Mahindra XUV on the Jagtap Dairy–Wakad BRT Road left a family injured and raised fresh questions about safety on dedicated bus corridors. The crash occurred in the middle of the BRT lane, and the impact was severe enough for airbags in both vehicles to deploy immediately.
According to initial information, the family travelling in the i10 suffered injuries in the accident. The stretch has seen a steady rise in private vehicles entering the BRT lane, despite repeated warnings from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and traffic police.
Officials say encroachment on BRT routes has increased across Pimple Saudagar, Pimpri, Wakad, Nigdi and other areas. These lanes were built exclusively for PMPML buses, but private vehicles continue to use them, slowing bus movement and increasing the risk of accidents. Heavy fines imposed by the traffic police have not led to much improvement.
The incident comes at a time when Pune is already witnessing a spike in road mishaps, including a recent scare on the Navale Bridge in Narhe. PCMC has indicated it will take stricter action against drivers who illegally enter BRT corridors, as repeated violations continue to compromise safety and traffic flow.
The patients were immediately received at Vencer Hospital located at Jagtap dairy chowk where they were diagnosed of head injuries, multiple fractures and eye injuries as reported by Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Sameer Patil, Neoro surgeon Dr. Avishkar Kadhao and eye surgery Dr. Sharoon Shitole. Patients are reported to be out of danger and doing fine.
