The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has tightened regulations on free water tanker distribution following reports of misuse by contractors. The city provides around 1,400 free tanker trips, with 1,000 designated for fixed allocations and 400 reserved for emergencies. However, an investigation found that many of these emergency trips were being carried out without official authorization.

Due to inadequate water supply networks in newly merged villages and some older city areas, PMC provides free water tankers through appointed contractors, who receive ₹1,140 per trip. These contractors are supposed to operate under the corporation’s instructions and submit invoices for payments.

However, several tanker operators with alleged political connections have been supplying water without formal approval, diverting resources to selected areas or even outside city limits while falsely claiming transportation costs from PMC.

To curb such practices, PMC has now enforced strict measures. Tanker operators are prohibited from exchanging water among themselves, and any attempt to submit false invoices for unauthorized deliveries will result in non-payment.

The Water Supply Department stated, “The rule was already in place but was not strictly followed. Summer water shortages due to supply cuts or pipeline damage increase tanker demand, making the situation challenging. We have now directed all junior engineers to ensure strict compliance and not allow tanker distribution without proper authorization.”
