Pune Civic Body Proposes Rs 67.3 Crore Underpass To Ease Traffic Congestion Near MundhwaÂ
In a bid to alleviate traffic congestion in the Mundhwa-Magarpatta area, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed the construction of an underpass at a cost of approximately Rs 67.3 crore. The underpass, to be developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis, aims to ease traffic movement, particularly at the Kad Vasti junction and Jehangir Chowk, which are prone to frequent traffic snarls.
This underpass will be the second proposed by the PMC in the Mundhwa area to address the increasing vehicular congestion. A study is already underway for an underpass at the Mundhwa Chowk to provide easy access to the Kharadi bypass.
According to PMC officials, the underpass will help speed up commutes in the Nagar Road, Mundhwa, Magarpatta, and Hadapsar areas, which have witnessed significant residential and commercial development in recent years.
The proposed underpass will be located at the Kad Vasti crossing ahead of Tadigutta Chowk towards Magarpatta. The PMC is expecting private developers to come forward to construct the underpass on a PPP and credit note basis model.
Residents of Mundhwa have welcomed the proposal, stating that the demand to clear bottlenecks in the area has been long pending. They pointed out that vehicles often remain stuck at traffic signals for extended periods, and key junctions like Mundhwa Chowk, Tadigutta Chowk, and Kad Vasti Chowk are overburdened.
While acknowledging the need for infrastructure development, residents also emphasized the importance of a strong public transport system in the area. They noted that the lack of reliable public transport forces people to rely on private vehicles, contributing to increased traffic volume and congestion.
Road department officials stated that the administration is also considering widening several road stretches in the coming year, with plans being worked out. Some roads are already being widened, including a key road from Tadigutta Chowk to North Main Road, in collaboration with the Defence authorities.
