Pune, May 22, 2026: Citizens have expressed concern over the rising expenditure on water tanker supply in Pune, as the civic administration continues to spend crores annually instead of implementing long-term solutions to address the city’s water scarcity.
According to information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has spent approximately ₹27.74 crore on tanker-based water supply during the financial year 2025–26 across various newly added villages and water-scarce areas.
The data was accessed by Hadapsar resident Tanaji Pandurang Gholap through an RTI application filed under the RTI Act, 2005, seeking details of tanker water supply expenses handled by the Lashkar Water Supply Department.

Officials confirmed that due to persistent drinking water shortages in newly included areas under PMC jurisdiction, tanker supply was extensively used to meet demand.
As per the department’s response, nearly ₹6 crore was spent under the Lashkar Water Supply division alone. Additionally, ₹8.80 crore was allocated for water supply through tankers in 11 newly added villages.
A further ₹8 crore was spent on supplying water to 23 villages, while around ₹9 crore was allocated for tanker operations in Uruli Devachi and Phursungi areas.
The total estimated expenditure on tanker water supply for the year stands at ₹27,74,53,288, officials said.
Residents have criticized the civic body for continuing to rely heavily on tanker supply, stating that repeated annual spending of such a large amount highlights the lack of permanent water infrastructure.
Citizens and local representatives have urged the municipal administration to prioritize long-term water supply schemes and sustainable solutions to permanently resolve the water shortage problem instead of depending on temporary measures like tanker distribution.
