Pune: Delay In Water Hyacinth Removal Near Holkar Bridge Raises Health Concerns
Pune, March 26, 2026: Allegations of administrative negligence have surfaced over delays in clearing water hyacinth and waste from the river near Sant Dnyaneshwar Ghat in the Holkar Bridge area of Yerwada.
Social activist Sachin Bhosale has accused authorities of failing to address the issue despite repeated complaints. According to him, large quantities of water hyacinth and garbage have accumulated in the river for months, leading to a surge in mosquito breeding and posing health risks to residents.
He further alleged that although the Pune Municipal Corporation floats tenders worth crores every year for cleaning water hyacinth, contractors often fail to complete the work on time. The work, which is expected to be completed during the summer, is allegedly delayed until the onset of monsoon. As a result, rainwater naturally washes away the hyacinth, after which the work is reportedly shown as completed, raising concerns over misuse of public funds.

With the monsoon approaching, Bhosale has demanded immediate removal of water hyacinth and waste from the river. He also called for a detailed inquiry into the delays and urged strict action against responsible officials and contractors.
Warning of agitation if prompt action is not taken, Bhosale emphasized the urgency of the situation, citing growing public health concerns in the area.
