Pune, March 18, 2026: Authorities in Pune have intensified action against the illegal sale of LPG cylinders after supply disruptions led to shortages across the city. The Food and Civil Supplies Department has formed three dedicated teams to monitor and curb black marketing activities.

According to Food Supply Officer Prashant Khatal, these teams have already inspected nearly 150 locations suspected of irregularities. The move comes as both commercial and domestic gas supplies have been affected, making it difficult for residents to access LPG cylinders.

Officials linked the disruption to ongoing global geopolitical tensions involving Iran, United States, and Israel, which have impacted fuel transportation routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz. These developments have strained supply chains and triggered local shortages.

In response, authorities have urged citizens to report any instances of overpricing or illegal sales. Khatal warned that strict action would be taken against those found violating regulations.

Monitoring has also been extended to the taluka level, where inspection teams are keeping a close watch on gas agencies and crowding outside distribution centres. To prevent misuse and streamline distribution, agencies have been instructed to deliver cylinders only against confirmed bookings rather than direct over-the-counter sales.

Despite the current challenges, officials said that Pune continues to distribute around 93,000 domestic LPG cylinders daily. Residents have been advised to remain calm, avoid panic buying, and rely only on verified information from official sources.
