Mumbai, 23 July, 2024 – Pune has established its unique identity as a hub of educational, cultural, commercial, and industrial opportunities. To further enhance its reputation as a congestion-free city, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has directed the effective implementation of modern technologies and various measures during a meeting at the Ministry.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar reviewed the traffic congestion issues in Pune comprehensively in his committee room at the Ministry. The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary of the Public Works Department, Manisha Mhaskar, Additional Chief Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Asim Kumar Gupta, Secretary of the Public Works Department, Sadashiv Salunkhe, Pune Division Commissioner, Chandrakant Pulkundwar, and Additional Commissioner of Pune City Police, Manoj Patil. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase, and Additional Commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation, B. Prithviraj, participated via video conferencing. Pune city traffic police also presented their report.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated that the influx of people into Pune from various parts of the state, driven by industrial development and job opportunities, has led to rapid urbanization. This process is ongoing, with the city’s population doubling in recent years. The increasing population has put immense pressure on the city’s infrastructure, causing severe traffic congestion problems for local residents. He emphasized that Pune citizens must be relieved of traffic congestion issues under any circumstances and directed the effective implementation of various measures.
Pawar further mentioned that all possible measures to resolve the traffic congestion in Pune will be undertaken. Initial focus will be on low-cost, quick-to-complete solutions. These include starting one-way traffic systems, removing encroachments on roadsides, reducing signal timings, managing traffic without signals, widening internal roads, and addressing missing links.
The Pune traffic police are instructed to send a detailed proposal for traffic congestion solutions. In this regard, the municipal corporation should remove encroachments at Navale Junction on the Pune-Katraj road. The Pune City Police Commissioner should provide police assistance for this. Priority should be given to resolving traffic congestion at locations like Navale Bridge, Koregaon Park, and ABC Chowk. Funding will be provided for initiatives aimed at relieving Pune residents from traffic congestion. The use of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies is recommended to tackle this issue. The concerned departments—police, municipal corporation, public works, and PMRDA—should work in coordination to free Pune residents from this problem, and a coordination committee with experts from these departments should be established, as per the instructions of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
