In a major breakthrough, Crime Branch Unit-2 of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate arrested a notorious Iranian-origin accused who posed as a police officer to cheat elderly men and women by deceitfully stealing their gold jewellery.
Over the past few days, several incidents were reported in the Pimpri-Chinchwad police jurisdiction where senior citizens were approached by fraudsters impersonating police personnel. The accused would mislead victims under the pretext of police verification and cleverly remove their gold ornaments. A similar incident was reported in the jurisdiction of Hinjawadi Police Station, where Crime No. 82/2026 was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Taking serious note of the gravity of the offences, Police Commissioner Vinay Kumar Chaube directed the Crime Branch to immediately trace and arrest the accused. Under the guidance of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime-1) Vishal Hire, a special team from Crime Branch Unit-2 launched an intensive investigation.
The police team examined around 100 to 120 CCTV footage clips from multiple locations, which led them to Irani Vasti, Ambivli, Thane. After two days of surveillance and undercover operation, the team successfully apprehended the आरोपी, identified as Mohammad Sayyed Kambar Ali (40), a resident of a rented room near Star Bakery, Irani Vasti, Ambivli, Thane.
Despite resistance from local relatives during the arrest, the police team displayed courage and took the accused into custody on February 13, 2026, and brought him to the Crime Branch Unit-2 office for further interrogation.
During investigation, the accused confessed to involvement in the following cases:
- Hinjawadi Police Station
- Dehu Road Police Station
Police officials stated that the accused is a history-sheeter involved in multiple cheating cases across different states, using the same modus operandi of impersonating police officers and targeting elderly citizens. Further investigations are underway to trace additional cases linked to him.
Citizens having information about similar crimes are requested to contact Senior Police Inspector Arvind Pawar, Crime Branch Unit-2, Pimpri-Chinchwad Police.
