Pune: FDA Appeals Citizens Not To Panic Ahead Of Chemists’ Shutdown Call On May 20
Pune, May 18, 2026: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pune division, has appealed to citizens to remain calm and stock essential medicines in advance amid a proposed shutdown call by the All India Chemists and Druggists Association on May 20.
In an official statement issued on Monday, May 18, 2026, FDA Joint Commissioner (Drugs) G D Hukare urged residents not to believe rumours and to maintain patience while making necessary arrangements for medicines and medical supplies.

According to the administration, most medical stores across Pune city and district are likely to remain closed during the bandh. However, government hospitals, emergency medical services and select pharmacy chains are expected to continue operations.
Authorities stated that pharmacy outlets affiliated with hospitals, along with chains such as MedPlus, Apollo Pharmacy and Wellness Forever, are likely to remain operational to avoid inconvenience to patients.
The FDA also clarified that chemist licences are issued under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, with the primary objective of ensuring timely availability of medicines to patients. Officials warned that strict action would be taken against any artificial shortage of medicines or violation of applicable laws during the shutdown period.
The department has appealed to chemists not to participate in the bandh in the interest of public health and patient welfare.
