In a recent operation, the Food and Drug Administration, FDA, took decisive action against Jai Bajrang Cold Drinks and Juice Bar in Belhe village of Junnar Tehsil following the alarming discovery of a frozen rat within an ice block meant for consumption. The vendor, who has been operating for the past four years, was found to be lacking essential licenses mandated by the Food Safety and Standards Act, and Food Safety and Standards Rules, Prompted by a viral video circulating on social media showing the unsettling presence of a rodent in the ice, FDA officials swiftly intervened. 

Led by joint commissioner Arjun Bhujbal, along with assistant commissioner SB Kodgire and food safety officers BA Shinde, SN Jagtap, and AG Gaikwad, the raid uncovered not only the unhygienic practice but also the absence of proper regulatory compliance. 

Further investigation revealed that the ice blocks used by the vendor were sourced from a company in Nighoj village, Ahmednagar. To ensure accountability across the supply chain, the FDA Pune team has alerted authorities in Ahmednagar to conduct a thorough inspection of the ice manufacturing facility. In response to the egregious violation of food safety standards, the FDA issued a “stop activity” notice to the vendor, effectively halting operations. 

Approximately 300 kg of edible ice was destroyed on-site, and samples of both ice and other food items from the juice center were collected for laboratory analysis., This incident underscores the critical importance of stringent adherence to food safety regulations and the vigilance required by regulatory authorities to safeguard public health. The FDA remains committed to enforcing these standards to prevent such lapses in the future and ensure the safety of consumers., 2006, 2011.
