Pune: Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan raised serious concerns over the rising cases of extortion targeting businesses in Maharashtra. Speaking at the Gandhi Darshan Camp organized by the Maharashtra Gandhi Smarak Nidhi and Yuvak Kranti Dal on Sunday, Chavan questioned the accountability of the Chief Minister and Home Minister in controlling such illegal activities.

“Instead of becoming an industrial hub, Maharashtra is witnessing businesses relocating to other countries due to extortion practices. New investments will not come to the state unless these activities are curbed. If the Chief Minister and Home Minister are not responsible, then who is?” Chavan asked.

During his address on the topic of the current political scenario, Chavan criticized the lack of internal democracy in political parties and the political instability in the state. He also pointed out that several political leaders treat parties as private enterprises, switching sides for convenience.

Chavan further expressed concerns over the lack of enforcement of the anti-defection law and the judiciary’s role in safeguarding democracy. “For two years, Maharashtra had an illegal government. The judiciary’s inaction during this period raises questions about the legislature’s influence over the judiciary,” he remarked.

He also highlighted systemic issues in governance, stating that corruption and political instability have made elections increasingly expensive and inaccessible without unethical practices.

Chavan concluded with several recommendations, including stricter anti-defection laws, a review of the election code of conduct, and a serious consideration of electoral funding reforms. He called for urgent measures to restore democracy to its intended principles.

Other speakers at the event, including human rights activist Anand Teltumbde and Prof. Nitish Navasagre, emphasized the relevance of Gandhian and Ambedkarite principles in addressing contemporary challenges.
