Schools in Pune are experiencing significant delays in obtaining character verification certificates for their non-teaching staff from the Pune police. Despite submitting documents nearly two months ago, school authorities have been met with excuses from police officers, causing unnecessary delays in the process.
The character verification certificates are mandated by the government, and schools are required to register on mahaonline.gov.in and submit documents to the nearest police station. The police are then supposed to issue the certificates within 21 days.
The delays are causing concern among school authorities, particularly in light of recent incidents of sexual harassment in schools. The police and education department have issued instructions to conduct character verification of all workers and staff, including van drivers, rickshaw drivers, helpers, sanitation workers, and non-teaching staff working on a contract basis.
School management committee members and principals are frustrated with the delays, citing the need for the certificates to ensure compliance with government regulations. “We submitted documents of all our staff and are seeking a report from the police, but it has been delayed for quite some time,” said Shripad Tupe, a school management committee member in Hadapsar while talking to the media person.
A school principal said, “At the time of recruitment, we have been doing our own verification of the candidates apart from the state government instructions. However, once we have the police-issued certificates of the existing staff, we will feel relieved.”
Education officer for secondary schools in Pune zilla parishad Bhausaheb Karekar emphasized the importance of obtaining the certificates, stating to the media person that, “These certificates are necessary during school inspections. The school management should complete the process as soon as possible.”
