According to reports, the scam happened between March 2020 and December 2021. After the insurance company manager’s original complaint application was verified, an FIR about cheating and forgery was filed on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

The 39-year-old branch manager of a private insurance agency filed a complaint with the Pune Viman Nagar Police alleging that four former workers had faked documents in the names of 97 claimants and tricked the company by claiming insurance totalling more than Rs 2.23 Cr.

According to reports, the scam happened between March 2020 and December 2021. After the insurance company manager’s original complaint application was verified, an FIR about cheating and forgery was filed on Wednesday, June 5. The police are now looking into this allegation.

“After the outbreak of the pandemic, the four officials responsible for sanctioning insurance claims had received a large number of applications from claimants, seeking reimbursement for money spent on Covid and other medical treatment,” stated Crime Inspector Sarjerao Kumbhar on Thursday, June 6.

Kumbhar continued, “The suspects altered the claimants’ identities from medical records and fabricated the names of their friends and family before authorizing the insurance claims. According to the allegation, they consequently moved more than Rs 2.23 Cr into their bank accounts.”  According to him, the insurance firm audited the approved and paid claims following document verification, which is how the scam was discovered.
