Pune: Hadapsar Gadital, Magarpatta Chowk Flyovers Likely To Be Demolished For 40-km Multi Level Flyover Project
Pune, February 24, 2026: Two key flyovers in east Pune — at Hadapsar Gadital and Magarpatta Chowk — are likely to be dismantled to make way for a proposed 40-km multilevel flyover and Metro corridor planned along the Solapur Highway stretch from Bhairoba Nullah to Yavat. The recommendation has been made by consultants for the project, though a final decision is still pending.
The development follows the recent removal of the flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk and is part of a broader plan to create an integrated elevated transport corridor aimed at easing long-term traffic congestion.
The multilevel flyover is being executed by the Centre and will run parallel to a proposed elevated Metro line. According to the experts, constructing the new corridor would require clearing the existing structures at Magarpatta Chowk and Hadapsar Gadital.
While acknowledging that the proposal may face public concern, it is recommended that the larger benefits must be taken into consideration. The Gadital flyover is ageing and requires regular upkeep, and even relatively new infrastructure may need to be sacrificed if technical studies deem it necessary for a larger mobility upgrade.
Officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation said the project is a Central government initiative that combines road and Metro infrastructure on a single alignment — a model already implemented at junctions such as SPPU Chowk and Nal Stop. They noted that retaining the existing flyovers could complicate engineering plans for the six-lane elevated corridor.
Although construction is expected to cause temporary inconvenience, authorities believe the completed project will significantly reduce travel time and traffic bottlenecks for commuters from Hadapsar and those travelling along Solapur Road.
Civic sources said the proposal has reached the tendering stage and will be implemented by the National Highways Authority of India. The initiative has been led by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, who has held multiple review meetings with senior state leaders, including Ajit Pawar. Following technical evaluations ordered during those discussions, consultants recommended the removal of the two flyovers to facilitate the larger corridor project.
Authorities indicated that further consultations will be held before a final call is taken.
