Pune: Heavy Rain Triggers Water Release from Khadakwasla Dam
In response to heavy rainfall and rising water levels, the Khadakwasla Dam released 856 cubic feet per second of water into the Mutha River at midnight on Wednesday, September 4.
The dam chain had been experiencing rainfall throughout the day. By midnight, Temghar recorded 26 mm of rain, Panshet 25 mm, Varasgaon 12 mm, and Khadakwasla just 1 mm. As of 5 pm, the Varasgaon Dam was 99.54% full, and by midnight, it reached 99.91% capacity.
Consequently, 900 cusecs of water were released into the River Mose.
Additionally, 600 cusecs of water were discharged for power generation purposes. Specifically, 275 cusecs came from Temghar and 600 cusecs from Panshet, totaling 875 cusecs for power generation.
This resulted in 2,375 cusecs of water directly accumulating in the system. At the same time, 1,005 cusecs of water were being released through the canal from Khadakwasla Dam.
The dam’s water level was recorded at 96.64% at midnight.
The increase in rainfall, particularly after 10 pm, prompted the significant water discharge. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to manage water levels and ensure safety.
