The implementation of the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections is anticipated to affect the ongoing pre-monsoon civic works and social welfare schemes of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). These schemes encompass crucial tasks such as road repairs, nullah cleaning, and the distribution of scholarships to deserving students.

Rajendra Bhosale, the administrator of the PMC, highlighted the need to seek approvals from the Election Commission to ensure the completion of civic projects amidst the election period. The pre-monsoon preparations, including cleaning stormwater drains, road maintenance, and addressing chronic flooding spots, require an estimated budget of Rs 200 crore, as stated by PMC officials.

One of the notable social welfare schemes affected by the model code of conduct is the distribution of scholarships to meritorious students. With approximately 1,400 students awaiting scholarships, the PMC’s initiative aims to reward academic excellence. Eligible students, scoring above 85% in SSC and 80% in HSC exams, stand to benefit from this scheme.

However, the disbursement of scholarships faces delays due to the direct benefit transfer (DBT) process. As a result, payments to students who have not yet received their scholarships are likely to be put on hold until the code of conduct is lifted, according to a senior PMC official.

The pre-monsoon works in Pune’s civic wards encompass vital activities such as cleaning stormwater lines, channels, and ducts, along with repairing flood-prone areas. Concerns regarding flooding issues have prompted demands for third-party inspections and proposals for joint cleaning drives to mitigate potential risks during the upcoming monsoon season.
