Pune: Kondhwa Rape Case Sparks Outrage, Raises Alarms Over City's Law And Order Situation
Pune, July 3, 2025: In the wake of the shocking rape incident in Kondhwa Budruk, questions are being raised about the crumbling law and order situation in Pune. Once hailed as the fastest-growing city in Asia with a population of nearly 7 million, Pune now finds its women unsafe even within the confines of their homes.
Sharply criticizing the current state government, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar faction) Pune City President Prashant Jagtap said, “The law and order situation in Pune is now at the mercy of fate due to the apathy of the Modi-Shah government at the Centre and the Fadnavis-Pawar government in Maharashtra. This Kondhwa incident is a betrayal of the trust Pune citizens placed in the BJP.”
Jagtap pointed out that since 2014, Pune voters have supported the BJP in municipal, assembly, and parliamentary elections, expecting safety and development in return. However, the current scenario under Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis has left residents vulnerable.
He further demanded that Fadnavis resign over his failure to ensure public safety. “If the government cannot guarantee protection, the CM and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar should openly declare that Puneites should make their own security arrangements,” Jagtap added.
A resident of Kondhwa, Atul Jain shared with Pune Pulse that the incidents of violence against women are rising in the city. Police need to tighten the security and ensure that women feel safe. Yesterday’s incident has brought into limelight that women are not safe even within their homes. Societies should now not allow any outsider and ensure strict checking of everyone is done at the security gate.
A Bibvewadi resident expressed concern over the growing crimes against women in Pune, pointing out that multiple such incidents have been reported in recent days with minimal visible action from the police to curb them.
“There is an urgent need for the police to strengthen security across the city,” the resident said. “Increased patrolling, installation of CCTV cameras, and the use of AI technology to monitor and prevent crimes should be prioritized.”
The resident also highlighted that in many parts of Pune—particularly in the newly merged areas—police presence is almost non-existent. “There is no regular patrolling or naka bandi in these fringe areas, leaving residents feeling unsafe,” they added.
