The lush hills of Sahyadri have been attracting tourists, thanks to the heavy rains in July. One of the popular destinations, Bhimashankar, witnesses a significant number of visitors every year.

However, the road to Bhimashankar has encountered a major obstacle at Newalwadi within the limits of Shinoli village. A massive landslide has blocked the road, leading to one-way traffic on Monday, July 31. To avoid congestion, the authorities have made alternative arrangements for travelers to reach Bhimashankar via Wada village, within the Khed police station limits.

In recent days, heavy rains have battered the tribal areas of Ambegaon taluka, resulting in water flowing on roads and small bridges at multiple locations. Motorists are advised not to drive through flooded roads. When enquired at the Ghodegaon Police Station they informed that the single road is operational while the alternate route is via Wada village. The police also urged everyone to travel safely.

Currently, traffic to Bhimashankar is operating as one-way due to the road blockage at Shinoli-Newalwadi. In case of increased traffic, diversion will be implemented via Koldara-Amondi. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to explore other transportation options and ensure smooth traffic flow as quickly as possible.

Bhimashankar, situated in Pune district’s Khed taluka, is renowned as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of India. The sacred Bhima River, a significant waterway in Western Maharashtra, originates from this Jyotirlinga.

Amidst the lush Sahyadri mountains, Bhimashankar is surrounded by dense forests. The area is home to various wildlife, including wild boar, sambar, sheep, wild cats, leopards, and numerous bird species. The distinct reddish fox, known as “shekaru,” is a prominent inhabitant found exclusively in this forest. The forest department has undertaken conservation initiatives, especially for the protection of leopards.

Located atop a high mountain in the western Sahyadri range, Bhimashankar’s temple is nestled amidst thick forests and lofty mountains. As the sixth Jyotirlinga, this religious site dedicated to Lord Shankar holds great significance, drawing devotees and nature enthusiasts alike.
