The city’s weather began shifting from early May after initial highs of 40°C. From May 7 onward, pre-monsoon cloud formation led to frequent downpours. Key areas such as Shivajinagar, Kothrud, Hadapsar, and Sinhagad Road experienced moderate to heavy rain, resulting in waterlogging, tree falls, and traffic disruptions, especially on May 9, 18, and 19.

The IMD issued orange and yellow alerts multiple times due to heightened convective activity. May 20 marked the peak of this rainfall phase, with Chinchwad recording nearly 100 mm and Shivajinagar 40.5 mm in 24 hours—the highest daily totals for the month so far.

Meteorologists attribute this unusual weather to a mix of strong westerlies, moisture inflow from the Arabian Sea, and upper-air cyclonic circulations. Experts warn that such unseasonal rainfall may become increasingly common due to evolving climate patterns.

The IMD has predicted continued rainfall over Pune till at least May 25, with isolated heavy spells expected on May 23 and 24. With more rain forecast and nine days still left in the month, Pune could potentially set a new all-time May rainfall record.

As of May 21, a cyclonic circulation over the east-central Arabian Sea near the Karnataka-Goa coast is expected to evolve into a low-pressure area and further intensify into a depression. This system may bring widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada regions.

An orange alert has been issued for Pune, Satara, Kolhapur (especially ghat areas), Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg from May 21 to 23. Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, avoid flood-prone zones, and stay indoors during thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is expected to arrive early in Maharashtra this year, with onset over Kerala likely between May 24 and 25—the earliest in 15 years. The monsoon is projected to reach Goa and Sindhudurg around May 28.
