Pune Metro Extension to Chandni Chowk and Wagholi Gets Green Light with Revised Project Cost
Pune Metro Expansion: Bibvewadi and Balajinagar Underground Stations Get State Nod At ₹683 Crore
Pune, August 21, 2025 – The state government has approved the revised cost for extending the Vanaz-Ramwadi Metro line to Chandni Chowk in the west and Wagholi in the east, accelerating progress on this much-awaited urban transit project.
The total cost has been finalized at ₹3,626.24 crore, slightly lower than the earlier estimate of ₹3,756.58 crore. Both the state and central governments will contribute ₹479.71 crore each, while ₹1,867 crore will be raised through bilateral and multilateral loans. Additionally, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will provide ₹24 lakh, and the state will offer an interest-free loan of ₹656 crore for land acquisition, rehabilitation, and construction work.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol welcomed the decision, stating, “I thank the state government for approving two more stations—Balajinagar and Bibwewadi—on the proposed Swargate-Katraj underground route.”
The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) will execute the project, which includes stations, tracks, signaling, rolling stock, platform screen doors, cyber security measures, and multi-modal integration.
The Metro’s reach to Chandni Chowk and Wagholi will benefit thousands of commuters daily.
The Centre cleared the revised plan on July 16, while the state Cabinet gave its final approval on August 19. Urban development officials confirmed that cost reductions were achieved without compromising essential facilities.
