Pune Metro Set For Overhaul: Expansion From Vanaz–Katraj To Chakan, Single-Ticket Travel Planned
Pune, April 11, 2026: The city’s metro network is set for a major transformation, with multiple new corridors, extensions, and commuter-friendly initiatives announced by Shravan Hardikar during a recent press conference.
With rapid expansion plans underway, the MahaMetro aims to make travel across Pune faster, more seamless, and more accessible.
One of the most significant developments is the plan to turn the Civil Court Metro Station into a central interchange hub. This will allow passengers to switch between all three metro lines at a single location. Authorities are also working on introducing a unified QR code-based ticketing system, enabling commuters to travel across all lines with a single ticket.
Key Metro Expansion Projects:
- PCMC to Bhakti Shakti (Nigdi) Extension:
A 4.5 km elevated corridor with stations at Chinchwad, Akurdi, Nigdi, and Bhakti Shakti is currently under construction and is targeted for completion by 2027. - Swargate to Katraj Underground Corridor:
Spanning approximately 5.5 km, this stretch will include stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, Bibwewadi, Balaji Nagar, and Katraj. The bidding process is complete, and construction is expected to begin soon, with a completion target of 2029. - Vanaz to Chandni Chowk:
Work orders have been issued for this corridor, with completion expected within the next 2.5 to 3 years. - Ramwadi to Wagholi:
This corridor is currently in the planning stage, with tenders yet to be issued. - Future Corridors (Phase 3):
Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been prepared or are in progress for multiple routes, including Nigdi–Wakad–Bhosari–Chakan and Ramwadi to Pune Airport, along with extensions towards Dhayari, Saswad Road, Loni Kalbhor, Kondhwa, and Yewalewadi.
Additional Developments:
Plans are also in place to introduce 27 new metro trains, with orders already placed for 12. Infrastructure upgrades such as double-decker flyovers along the Viman Nagar–Kharadi corridor are also proposed. A pedestrian bridge at the District Court station is expected to be completed within the next 2–3 months, improving connectivity between metro lines.
Growing Ridership:
Pune Metro has witnessed strong public response, with around 7.08 crore यात्राएं recorded in 2025–26. Daily ridership currently stands at approximately 2 lakh passengers and is expected to rise to 3 lakh in the near future. The Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor accounts for nearly 60% of total ridership.
The expansion, supported under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis, is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and strengthen sustainable urban transport across the Pune Metropolitan Region.
