Pune, August 30, 2025 – Forest department officials have placed two modified cages designed to resemble stormwater pipes along the airside of Pune airport to capture a fully grown male leopard that has been roaming the area since April.

The animal has avoided traditional traps, leading authorities to redesign them to mimic the underground pipes it frequently uses for movement in and out of the premises.

The leopard was first sighted near the Indian Air Force (IAF) base on April 28, with multiple sightings reported since, the latest on August 13. Monitoring teams, including members of RESQ Charitable Trust, are tracking its movements through trap cameras that send instant alerts. Once the leopard is spotted, baited cages are activated to ensure safe capture.

Airport authorities have been clearing overgrown grass to reduce potential hiding spots, while recommendations have been made to strengthen sections of the boundary wall to restrict access. The IAF has implemented heightened security measures across the 3,500-acre campus, including watchtowers, perimeter patrols, and armed guards to ensure safety.
