Pune–Mumbai Expressway: Heavy Congestion Reported Near Amritanjan Bridge Again
Pune, February 6, 2026: Traffic congestion was reported once again on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway on Friday afternoon after a truck overturned near the Amritanjan Bridge in the Khandala section, causing major disruption to vehicular movement.
According to commuters travelling from Pune towards Mumbai, traffic movement came to a near standstill around 5 pm, with long queues of vehicles forming on the Mumbai-bound lane. A commuter informed Pune Pulse that congestion had persisted for over 30 minutes, urging motorists to remain alert and plan their travel accordingly to avoid further delays.
Eyewitnesses said the overturned truck blocked a significant portion of the carriageway, leaving limited space for vehicles to pass through. As a result, traffic movement slowed drastically, leading to a build-up of congestion across the stretch. Several commuters reported being stranded for extended periods, with emergency vehicles and heavy transport vehicles also affected by the jam.
When Pune Pulse contacted the IRB toll-free helpline, officials confirmed that traffic police had temporarily halted traffic to facilitate the safe removal of the overturned truck. The officials stated that safety protocols were being followed to prevent further accidents and ensure smooth clearance operations.
“Traffic has been stopped to remove the overturned vehicle safely. Once the truck is cleared from the road, traffic will be restored gradually,” a highway police said.
Tanaji Chikhale, Superintendent, Highway Police told Pune Pulse that the traffic was halted as the work to remove spilled over material is ongoing. The traffic would be released shortly as and when the work is over.
Authorities have advised commuters to exercise caution while travelling through the ghat section and to follow traffic advisories issued by the traffic police. Alternative routes and delayed travel plans were also suggested for motorists heading towards Mumbai during peak evening hours.
This incident adds to a series of recent traffic disruptions on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway, raising concerns among daily commuters and travellers about recurring congestion and accident-related blockades on the busy highway stretch.
Traffic movement is expected to return to normal once clearance operations are completed and the damaged vehicle is removed from the roadway.
