Pune Municipal Corporation Begins Vishrantwadi Flyover Construction
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has finally commenced work on the Vishrantwadi flyover and grade separator following the Pune traffic police’s issuance of a no-objection certificate (NOC) after nearly five months. On Wednesday, deputy commissioner of Pune traffic police Amol Zende issued the NOC, valid from September 4 to December 3, 2024, with specific terms and conditions.
PMC’s executive engineer, Ajay Wayse, confirmed that construction has started with the contractor beginning work on the flyover and underpass. Soil testing has been completed, allowing for immediate excavation for the flyover pillars on Airport Road.
To manage the expected traffic disruptions, Pune traffic police have directed traffic wardens to work in two shifts. They have also instructed the PMC to clear debris from the construction sites and install signboards for traffic diversion. The traffic police have highlighted potential congestion points and suggested additional measures to mitigate traffic issues.
Recommendations include establishing two new bus stops on the Alandi side, 250 meters from Vishrantwadi Chowk, to prevent traffic jams caused by PMPML buses. They also propose removing the island at Vishrantwadi Chowk to improve traffic flow. Road repairs, relocation of streetlight poles, and obtaining all necessary NOCs are also required.
Vishrantwadi’s Mukundrao Ambedkar Square is a critical junction, often congested. The flyover project, supported by local NCP MLA Sunil Tingre and launched with a foundation stone laid by deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar in March 2024, aims to alleviate these traffic issues.
