Pune Municipal Corporation Boosts Fire Department With Contract Staffers
In a bid to strengthen its fire department, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to hire around 140 firemen-firefighters and 50 driver-cum-machine operators on a contract basis. This move aims to ensure adequate staff round-the-clock at each station, addressing the existing shortage of around 150 firefighters.
The new recruits will be deployed at the central fire station in Bhavani Peth, 19 sub-fire stations across the city, and five newly constructed fire stations in Bavdhan, Baner, Kharadi, Mohammadwadi, and Dhayari. According to PMC officials, the hiring process can be completed within a couple of months, unlike the traditional process of filling vacant posts, which can take over a year.
The fire department is not only responsible for firefighting but also involved in various other works, including rescue operations, tree felling, and road repairs. With the increasing workload, the existing staff is overburdened, and the new recruits will help alleviate this pressure.
PMC officials emphasized that hiring personnel on a contract basis is a practical solution to address the staffing shortage. The contract staffers will provide much-needed support to the fire department, ensuring that the city’s fire safety needs are met efficiently.
