In an effort to address the increasing number of potholes on the city’s roads, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken action against its responsible officers. The PMC has issued show cause notices to four junior engineers from the road department, holding them accountable for the deteriorating condition of the roads they oversee.

Municipal commissioner Vikram Kumar stated that the civic officers had been previously warned about the potential consequences of poorly maintained roads during the monsoon season. As a result, the decision to serve show cause notices was taken in response to their failure to ensure adequate upkeep.

The responsibility for maintenance is divided between the road department of the PMC, which handles the main roads exceeding 12 meters in width, and the ward offices, which are responsible for smaller roads in their respective areas.

Addressing concerns about the prevalent issues on narrow roads, Kumar emphasized that the PMC is committed to addressing maintenance needs on both wide and narrow roads.

To address the situation promptly, V G Kulkarni, in-charge of PMC’s road department, informed that the ward offices have been instructed to initiate immediate repairs on narrow roads. To facilitate this process, each of the 15 ward offices has been assigned a dedicated vehicle.

Moreover, Kulkarni reassured that main roads, which suffered damage due to ongoing infrastructure-related work, are being prioritized for urgent repairs on a war footing.
