Pune: In an effort to conserve water, the Pune Municipal Corporation has enforced the use of treated water from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) for construction projects within the city. Initially met with resistance from builders, the corporation issued warnings and subsequently, 765 builders have now registered through the municipal app. This move has resulted in a significant reduction in the consumption of drinking water for construction, with approximately 490,000 litres being utilized thus far.

Recognizing the importance of preventing water wastage, the Municipal Corporation has taken measures to curb the extensive use of drinking water for construction purposes. With an 8-mile treatment plant purifying and returning around 400 to 450 million litres of water to the river, this treated water can now be effectively utilized for construction activities. The Municipal Corporation has repeatedly emphasized the importance of using treated water to builders, but the indiscriminate use of drinking water persisted until warnings of consequences were issued.

To streamline the process of recycling wastewater, the Pune Municipality has developed the STP Tanker app. This app has seen a total of 147 tanker owners and 765 builders registering, indicating their commitment to using treated water for construction purposes. Through the app, 490,000 litres of water have been successfully utilized for construction, with the cooperation of 147 tankers and 8 sewage projects.
