Pune: Nagar Road And Airport Road Footpaths In Dangerous Disrepair, Citizens Demand Urgent Restoration Before Monsoon

The condition of footpaths along the entire stretch of Nagar Road, including VIP Airport Road (Symbiosis Road), has become a serious safety concern for pedestrians. With monsoons approaching, citizens are calling on the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to urgently restore the footpaths as per Public Interest Litigation (PIL) No. 141 of 2023.

Activist Qaneez Sukhrani has raised the issue directly with PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, highlighting the negligence of the Road Department and demanding immediate action. “The current state of the footpaths is pathetic and completely unfit for pedestrian use. I’m bringing these gaps to PMC’s attention out of civic responsibility—though I shouldn’t have to,” she said.

She pointed out several problems contributing to the disrepair:

1. The area’s Executive Engineer (EE) has been unresponsive.
2. The Road Department team—including Junior Engineer (JE), Deputy Engineer (DE), and EE—has failed to hold contractors accountable, giving them unchecked control.
3. Sections of the footpaths are dug up for optical fibre cable (OFC) installation, while others have been excavated for Metro work.
4. Many areas are obstructed by parked vehicles, hawkers, and vendors.

Sukhrani alleges that PMC officials are complacent and favouring cable operators by not enforcing timely reinstatement of dug-up stretches. She has demanded that the  entire Nagar Road footpath be restored within the next 15 days.
