FTII Pune and SRFTI Kolkata Granted Deemed University Status, Empowered To Offer Degrees And PhDs
New Delhi, April 23, 2025: In a landmark move for film and media education in India, the Ministry of Education has granted deemed-to-be university status to the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune and the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata. The notification was issued under Section 3 of the UGC Act, following the University Grants Commission’s recommendation.
This upgrade allows both premier institutions to award degrees instead of diplomas and launch doctoral and advanced research programmes. “This development will enable FTII and SRFTI to introduce innovative academic programmes, participate in national rankings like the NIRF, and integrate with the Academic Bank of Credits,” said a senior official from the Ministry of Education. The decision aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy 2020, aiming to enhance autonomy, academic excellence, and global competitiveness in media studies.
Established in 1960 on the grounds of the historic Prabhat Studios, FTII Pune has played a pivotal role in shaping Indian cinema and television education. Initially a department of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, it evolved significantly after its rebranding in 1971 and expanded further when the Television Training Wing moved from Delhi to Pune in 1974.
SRFTI Kolkata, founded in 1995 and named after the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, is India’s second national film training institute. It offers postgraduate programmes in cinema and digital media across various specialisations and operates as an autonomous academic institution.
This new status marks a transformative chapter for both institutes, strengthening India’s position in global film and media education.
