Protest over Nasrapur minor’s death blocks Navale Bridge in Pune for 4 hours. Police action sparks controversy as CP Amitesh Kumar responds; accused remanded to custody till May 7.

Pune, May 3, 2026: Tension gripped Pune after a massive protest over the death of a minor girl from Nasrapur led to a complete blockade of the busy Navale Bridge on the Pune–Bengaluru Highway for nearly four hours. Protesters demanding strict punishment, including the death penalty for the accused, staged a road blockade by placing the child’s body on the highway.

The agitation caused severe traffic congestion across the stretch, prompting police to intervene and clear the road. According to eyewitnesses, police used force to disperse the crowd, leading to allegations of a lathi charge, including claims that women protesters were also targeted.

Some protesters alleged that the victim’s father was manhandled during the police action, further intensifying anger among demonstrators. Videos circulating on social media appear to show police using force, although officials have denied the claims.

Responding to the controversy, Amitesh Kumar, Commissioner of Pune Police, stated that no lathi charge was carried out. He said police only intervened to manage the situation and ensure the safety of the victim’s family.

“Some individuals were preventing the girl’s parents from leaving. We assisted them in getting into a vehicle safely. The police explained the situation to the protesters and acted responsibly,” Kumar said.

He further assured that both the state government and police are treating the case on priority and that a fast-track trial will be pursued. “We have assured the family that the chargesheet will be filed soon and strict action will be taken against the accused,” he added.

Meanwhile, the last rites of the minor were conducted late Saturday night under police protection, amid rising tensions in the region.

In a swift development, police had tracked down and arrested the accused within hours of the incident. The Shivajinagar Court has remanded the accused, identified as Kamble, to police custody until May 7.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage across Maharashtra, with growing demands for swift justice and stricter action in crimes against children.
