Worm found in food again, old contractor checked out by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU)

A worm was yet again detected in the food served in the refectory of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Wednesday, January 18, afternoon.  This time around, the students boycotted the meal and protested by taking back the money paid to the mess owner. The mess has been closed for the next five days and a new tender for the mess contractor has been invited by the University.

The students present in the mess opposed the activities of the current mess owner, as the incident had happened earlier too and the University administration has taken no action in this regard. This time when a worm was found, the University administration locked the mess.

Ambadas Mevhankar of ABVP said, “We met the University administration three times. We had also locked the mess last time after a worm was found but now we won’t allow the refectory to reopen with the same mess owner. Our only demand is that the mess owner should change and his tender should get suspended. The University administration has invited a new tender, so we will wait.”

He added, “Now we demand that a canteen committee be formed to control the entire process and a student representative should be appointed to it.”

“Students were frequently complaining about this mess owner and we had asked them to make the necessary changes but they did not do it.  So we have terminated their tender. A new contractor will be serving here from Monday, January 23,” said Dr Prafulla Pawar, Registrar of SPPU
