Pune: New Ravet Dam Project Worth ₹105 Crore Proposed To Improve Water Supply
Pune Division Tops Water Storage in Maharashtra; Yet Fadnavis Calls For Conservation Amid El Niño Concerns
Pune, March 13, 2026: Amid rising water demand in Pimpri-Chinchwad, local MLA Shankar Jagtap has urged the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly to allocate ₹105 crore for constructing a modern dam at Ravet and expedite the permanent transfer of land required for lifting water from the Andhra Dam.
Raising the issue during the budget session’s discussion on demands for grants, Jagtap said the projects are crucial to addressing the city’s long-term water requirements as the population continues to grow. He stated that securing land and upgrading existing water infrastructure would help prevent future shortages and ensure reliable supply to residents.
According to Jagtap, a proposal to permanently transfer 0.95 hectares of land at Mouje Shire in Maval taluka from the Water Resources Department is in its final stages. The land will be used to construct essential facilities such as a jackwell, approach channel, pump house and substation to enable direct water lifting from the dam.
The proposal has already been forwarded to the Maharashtra Krishna Basin Development Corporation for evaluation and approval. Jagtap has requested the state government to speed up the process so that technical hurdles in supplying water from the Andhra Dam to the city can be resolved.
He also highlighted the need to modernise the existing dam on the Pawana River at Ravet, which dates back to the British era. Due to heavy silt accumulation over the years, a significant amount of water—estimated at around 50 million litres daily—is currently being wasted.
To address the issue, the old structure is proposed to be replaced with a vertical lift shaft dam, a modern technology designed to prevent silt buildup and improve water storage efficiency. A detailed project proposal worth ₹105 crore has been submitted to the state government for approval.
Jagtap said both projects are vital for improving water management in the city and ensuring that residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad do not face water shortages in the future. He added that efforts are underway to accelerate approvals and funding for the initiatives.
