Pune: An eight-year-old boy, who was riding pillion on his mother’s scooter, died after a dumper hit their vehicle from behind and ran over him near Mantarwadi at around 2:30 pm on Wednesday. The dumper was later set on fire by an enraged crowd that had gathered at the site.

The boy was riding pillion with his sister on their mother’s scooter. They were travelling via Mantarwadi Phata to Wadachiwadi, where they were meeting her brother on Handewadi Road.

Later, the dumper driver was taken into custody by the Hadapsar police on suspicion of reckless and careless driving. As per information, the dumper driver lost control of his vehicle when he attempted to pass the scooter, according to a senior Hadapsar police official. He struck the two-wheeler from behind. The mother and her daughter were unharmed as they fell off the left side of the road. The dumper ran over the boy after he fell on the right side of the road. He died right away.

The dumper driver left the car and fled without reporting the collision to the police, the police official continued. An enraged crowd ignited the dump truck. When a police team arrived, the crowd broke up and left. For almost 45 minutes, the incident caused traffic congestion on the road. A fire tender arrived to douse the fire. A complaint has also been filed against unidentified men for setting the dumper on fire. The police informed us that they would investigate and find out who ignited the vehicle. Police are further investigating the case.
