Air India flight AI858 from Pune to Delhi made an emergency landing at Delhi IGI Airport yesterday evening when the A321neo regd as VT-PPO suffered a windshield crack mid air. Outer layer of co-pilot side windshield cracked due to bird strike. The aircraft with 180 passengers onboard landed safely.

The pilot on the flight suspected a crack in the windshield of the aircraft on the co-pilot’s side and asked for a priority landing, sources in Air India said. A minor crack was detected upon landing and it will be replaced, they added.

DGCA sources said, “The outer layer of the windshield cracked due to a bird hit.” The aircraft landed safely in Delhi and there was no emergency declared by the crew.

Air India on the issue commented, “Air India flight AI858 operating Pune-Delhi on 18 April 2023, safely landed in Delhi ahead of its scheduled arrival time, following a minor crack on the right (starboard side) of the operating aircraft’s windshield. All passengers and flight crew were safe. The aircraft will undergo the necessary maintenance procedure, and its windshield will be replaced.”
