The Congress party on Monday declared the candidate for upcoming by-elections to the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra. The party has fielded Ravindra Hemraj Dhangekar from the Kasba constituency.

After much speculation on Monday, Congress state president Nana Patole in his tweet said,”Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has decided to fight bypoll election in Pune district together. It was decided that Congress party will fight Kasba constituency and Ravindra Hemraj Dhangekar will be our candidate.’’

The Kasba Assembly seat became vacant after the death of BJP leader and former mayor Mukta Tilak.

By-elections of the two assembly constituencies (Kasba and Chinchwad) in Pune district, will be held on February 26. The counting of votes to all bypolls will be held on March 2.

As per the schedule declared by the election commission of India, the last date for nomination is February 7, scrutiny is February 8 and withdrawal of candidature is February 10.

Earlier the bypoll election date was scheduled on February 27. However, the election commission rescheduled the voting schedule following a request from the district election officer as school and college premises will be occupied on February 27 for Higher Secondary School and graduation examinations.
