A recently constructed bridge in Pimpri, connecting Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune city, has sparked controversy over its beautification costs. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has allocated ₹20 crore for beautification, adding to the initial ₹32.36 crore spent on construction.

The bridge, built by T&T Infra Limited Company, was initially scheduled for completion within two years but faced delays due to site acquisition issues with the National Agricultural Research Center. Despite the August 31, 2024 deadline extension, the bridge remains incomplete, and traffic has not been initiated.

Former mayor and corporators pushed for beautification, leading to a presentation before Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on August 25. The Municipal Commissioner and Administrator, Shekhar Singh, approved the ₹19.63 crore beautification expenditure.

However, concerns arise regarding the bridge’s connectivity. Roads leading to the bridge, including Mamtanagar, Dutt Ashram Math, Priyadarshini nagar, Pavana nagar, and Mula nagar in Sangvi, are narrow, potentially creating traffic congestion issues.

Locals question the prioritization of beautification over infrastructure development. “Spending crores on beautification when basic infrastructure like road widening is neglected is unjustified,” a resident said.

The Municipal Corporation defends the beautification plan, citing instructions from Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The project’s fate remains uncertain as residents await completion and resolution of traffic concerns.
